LNP silence on Baffle Creek not good enough - 05/03/09

The Wilderness Society (TWS) has criticised the Liberal National Party for not responding to formal requests and media stories calling for local candidates to clearly define their position on the long-term protection of the iconic Baffle Creek.

Rupert Quinlan, Rivers Campaigner for TWS said: “As far back as July 2008 the Wilderness Society and local community groups wrote to LNP leader Lawrence Springborg seeking his party’s position on the protection of Baffle Creek under Queensland’s Wild Rivers legislation.”

“They have ignored all requests. This is a very poor sign of their commitment to protect the Baffle and the environment.”

“What we and local community groups are asking for is that the LNP rule out a dam on the Baffle and confirmation that the party would protect the river permanently should they be elected”

The Wilderness Society is seeking permanent protection of Baffle Creek through legislation. The ALP has made several promises to rule out a dam.

“There is huge community support for the permanent protection of the Baffle, the LNP must get on board.” concluded Mr Quinlan.
